Maintain conveyors and associated equipment


Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to undertake fault finding, diagnosis, adjustments, exchange of rollers and preparations for belt splicing and/or repairs of conveyors and associated equipment.

Aconveyor systemis a continuous moving band of fabric, rubber or metal used for transporting bulk materials from one place to another in a power generation facility.

Competency in this unit requires the ability to plan work, remove associated equipment to facilitate maintenance, maintain conveyors and/or associated equipment, replace and/or install conveyors and/or associated equipment and to report on all completed work tasks. Individuals will, in general, work under supervision in an electrical, electronic and/or mechanical equipment repair workshop or on site.

Power generation maintenance personnel are typically trained and authorised to receive permits to work.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Note: Workplace practice

The application of the skills and knowledge described in this unit of competency may require a licence or training permit to practice in the workplace, where work is carried out on gas and electrical installations. Additional and/or other conditions may apply under state and territory legislative and regulatory licensing requirements.

Plan and prepare for work

1.1

Requirements including scope of work and assigned roles are identified and confirmed with appropriate personnel or by site inspection, in accordance with workplace procedures

Work, Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, legislative requirements, industry standards, codes of practice, manufacturers' specifications, environmental obligations and workplace procedures are reviewed in preparation for work

Remove associatedequipment to facilitate maintenance

Faulty components and parts of conveyor system are identified and isolations are confirmed, where appropriate, in accordance with workplace procedures

Associated equipment of conveyor system is disconnected, in accordance with the workplace procedures

Associated equipment of conveyor system is removed, in a manner which will assist in replacement, in accordance with the workplace procedures

Conveyors and associated equipment are inspected for abnormalities, in accordance with workplace procedures

Maintain conveyors or associated equipment

3.1

Belt tensioning equipment is released and secured, to facilitate maintenance, in accordance with workplace procedures

3.2

Sketches are made, data is noted and components are marked for identification or reassembly, in accordance with manufacturers' specification and workplace procedures

3.3

Modifications or alterations outside of manufacturers' specification are approved, in accordance with workplace procedures

3.4

New components are installed, and inspected for compliance with job specification, and are prepared for reassembly, in accordance with workplace procedures

3.5

Dimensional inspection is performed, in accordance with workplace procedures, using precision measuring devices to determine compliance

3.6

Conveyors are levelled, aligned and tensioned, in accordance with workplace procedures and site requirements

Replaceorinstall conveyors or associated equipment

4.1

Faulty components and parts are identified, and site is prepared for conveyors and associated equipment to be replaced, in accordance with workplace procedures

4.2

Conveyors and associated equipment are replaced, in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturers' specification

4.3

Conveyors and associated equipment are levelled, aligned and coupled, in accordance with workplace procedures

4.4

All fastenings are torqued, in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturers' specifications

4.5

Conveyors and associated equipment are given a test run, monitored and adjusted, as required, in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturers' specifications

Complete work

5.1

Work is completed and appropriate personnel are notified, in accordance with workplace procedures

Work area is cleared of waste, cleaned, restored and secured, in accordance with workplace procedures

Tools and equipment are cleaned, maintained and stored, in accordance with workplace procedures
